2006 NFL Mock Draft Extravaganza , Version 2.0
Apr 10, 2006
Author: Bill Wunkle, Staff Writer
After revising my draft board - and my top twenty in particular - I've revised my 2006 mock draft. At the request of our site administrator, I've included a third round to give what I thought would be a more complete look at day one. I've also included some trades that I think either will or could happen. So hang onto your hats folks, because here it is.
Round One
No. |
Team |
Name |
Pos. |
College |
Comments |
1 |
D’Brickashaw Ferguson |
OT |
Without a willing trading partner and a boatload of
dollars already invested in QB and RB, Houston fills their greatest need
by taking Ferguson off the board. |
2 |
Matt
Leinart
(1) |
QB |
Trade
with Saints.
Although they’ve already traded for Patrick Ramsey, the J-E-T-S still
need quality depth behind the often-injured Chad Pennington. |
3 |
Reggie
Bush
(2) |
RB |
Trade
with Titans.
The Niners make a wish and it comes true. Somehow Bush falls to a place
where it makes sense for them to move up and get their man. |
4 |
Mario
Williams
(1) |
DE |
Trade
with Jets.
Trade down, acquire extra picks and still get the player you covet. What
a plan! Williams is an absolute beast that fills a huge need for New
Orleans. |
5 |
A.J. Hawk
LB |
Browns fans are asking, “Why didn’t Senior VP and GM Phil
Savage move up to get him?” The answer is simple. They have far too many
needs. |
6 |
Vince
Young
(2) |
QB |
Trade
with 49ers.
There’s something about this pick that I just don’t like. Young is a
huge risk/reward type player that has “boom or bust” written all over
it. |
7 |
Haloti
Ngata |
DT |
Maybe Al Davis didn’t get the player
he coveted in Vince Young, but what Raider Nation did get is a
prototypical nose tackle for the middle of their D-line.
8 |
Vernon Davis
TE |
Davis is just too good for the Bills to not select here.
They’re thin at TE and Davis is a legitimate game breaker at the
position. |
9 |
Michael
Huff
S/CB |
With Josh McCown and Jon Kitna already at QB, Matt Millen
didn’t want to take a QB or WR. Huff is a complete player and can play
either corner or safety. |
10 |
Jay
Cutler |
QB |
With Vernon Davis off the board, the Cards take the man
who’ll be their franchise QB. Cutler will hold the clipboard for a year
before challenging for a starting spot. |
11 |
Jimmy
Williams |
CB |
Adam Archuleta is now in Washington and Anneas Williams
can’t play forever. This Williams is big enough to play either corner or
safety for St. Louis. |
12 |
Brodrick Bunkley
DT |
The Browns front seven gets another off-season upgrade in
Bunkley, who can play either DE or DT in Romeo Crennel’s 3-4 scheme. |
13 |
Tye Hill |
CB |
Neon Deion Sanders has retired (again). Hill had a solid
Senior Bowl week and solidified his position as the number 2 corner in
the draft. |
14 |
DeAngelo Williams
RB |
Brian Westbrook gets a running mate that will actually
give him competition for his starting job. This can be a min-win
situation in Philly. |
15 |
Chad Jackson |
WR |
Rod Smith is getting a little long in the tooth and
there’s nobody of consequence behind him. Jackson is a playmaker with
speed to burn. |
16 |
Jason Allen
S |
The fins take either a safety or receiver here. They can
get a better value at safety with Allen. |
17 |
Winston Justice
OT |
The O-line needs a stud tackle, and Justice has the
ability to play on either side. With Mount McKinney already at LT,
Justice will play RT. |
18 |
Chad Greenway |
LB |
Often compared to Brian Urlacher, Greenway is arguably
the best defensive player available at this point. He’s all over the
field making plays. |
19 |
Marcus McNeill |
OT |
The Chargers need a stud LT to anchor their O-line.
McNeill will be a top-shelf tackle for years to come. He does need to
stay healthy though. |
20 |
Santonio Holmes
WR |
The Chiefs get Trent Green a deadly target in Holmes;
who’s known for his speed, good hands and running precise pass routes.
They may go BPA next. |
21 |
Manny Lawson |
DE/
OLB |
Lawson will have an immediate impact as an OLB in Bill
Bellichick’s 3-4 defensive scheme. |
22 |
Leonard Pope |
TE |
The Broncos get a franchise caliber TE, something they
haven’t had since Shannon Sharpe. |
23 |
Ernie Sims |
LB |
The Buccaneer front seven just got better with this pick.
Sims may lack height, but he can play with the best of them. |
24 |
Mathias Kiwanuka |
DE/
OLB |
With the addition of DT Sam Adams, the Bengals have the
opportunity to take a pass rusher to compliment Justin Smith. They hope
to land a TE in round two. |
25 |
Bobby
Carpenter
(3) |
LB |
Trade
with Giants.
Phil Savage pulls the trigger and gets the player Cleveland needs to
complete their front seven. Carpenter is a madman on the field. |
26 |
Dominique Byrd |
TE |
TE is the greatest area of need for Da-Bears offense.
What will they do in round two? Stay tuned and see. |
27 |
DeMeco Ryans |
LB |
This may be the best year for LB’s in recent history.
Although undersized at 225 lbs., Ryans is a playmaker who can go from
sideline to sideline. |
28 |
Marcedes Lewis |
TE |
They really want to get a LB here, but Lewis fills a need
at TE as well. Besides, this draft is deep in quality LB’s.
29 |
Nick
Mangold
(1) |
C |
Trade
with Jets.
LeCharles is still in charge, but now he’s in Cleveland. Who better to
bring in to replace him than another Buckeye? |
30 |
Laurence Maroney
RB |
With Edgerrin James now in Arizona, the Colts need to
prepare for life without him. Maroney has the talent to validate a first
round pick. |
31 |
Max Jean-Gilles |
OG |
After losing Steve Hutchinson to Minnesota, Seattle
fortifies the interior of their O-line with a mammoth wide body.
Jean-Gilles is the best guard in the draft. |
32 |
Tamba
Hali |
DE |
Head Coach Bill Cowher will have Hali rush the opposing
QB from a two-point stance and continue his sack machine-like numbers. |
Round Two
No. |
Team |
Name |
Pos. |
College |
Comments |
33 |
Eric Winston |
OT |
The Texans need several quality O-linemen to protect
golden child David Carr. Now with Ferguson and Winston, they have their
bookends for years to come. |
34 |
Kamerion Wimbley
(4) |
DE/
OLB |
Trade
with Saints.
The Giants convert Wimbley to OLB and he becomes a sack machine for
them. |
35 |
Jonathan Scott |
OT |
Scott has been called a prototypical NFL LT prospect in
terms of size (6’-7”, 305 lbs.) and ability. This kid still has plenty
of upside as well. |
36 |
LenDale White |
RB |
His college career left many thinking that he would be an
early to mid first rounder. His pro day results found him wanting. Not a
big a risk to take in round two. |
37 |
Thomas Howard |
LB |
Somehow I see this kid as a real playmaker – whether or
not he makes a lot of INT’s. Howard has the speed to go from sideline to
sideline. |
38 |
D’Qwell Jackson
LB |
Not only is this a need, but Jackson is also the best one
available.
39 |
Daryn Colledge |
OT |
O-line is another concern in Tennessee, especially after
drafting a QB so high. Colledge is probably limited to playing RT at the
NFL level. |
40 |
Jonathan Joseph |
CB |
Maybe the Lions should take the best defensive player
available throughout the entire draft. |
41 |
Antonio Cromartie |
CB |
While it’s not a need, Cromartie is the best player
available. Sometimes you just need to go that way. |
42 |
Sinorice Moss |
WR |
Since trading Eric Moulds left a huge hole at WR, why not
take one here? Moss really improved his stock with his Senior Bowl week.
He may even go higher. |
43 |
Gabe
Watson
(3) |
DT |
Trade
with Browns.
An under-achiever in college, perhaps Watson needs a dose of Camp
Coughlin will help straighten him out. |
44 |
Donte Whitner |
S |
Will Demps left Baltimore for greener pastures, so why
not take a safety here? |
45 |
Claude Wroten |
DT |
From a talent perspective Wroten should go higher.
However, his lack of maturity may cause him to slide farther down the
draft. |
46 |
Ko Simpson |
S |
While defensive backs may not be the “sexy” pick, the
Rams are filling needs with talented players. It’s hard to argue with
that. |
47 |
Ashton Youboty |
CB |
I can already hear Chris Berman saying, “Shake, shake,
shake Youboty” with this pick. Youboty is still a bit raw, but he is
talented. |
48 |
Abdul Hodge |
LB |
It’s a good thing when you can fill a need with the best
player available. |
49 |
Darnell Bing |
S |
For some reason, safety is one of those positions where
players slide. Bing has a reputation of being a hitter. It also helps
that the Cowboys need a safety. |
50 |
Davin Joseph |
OG |
The move to revamp San Diego’s O-line continues with
Joseph. |
51 |
Richard Marshall |
CB |
The Vikings are another team that would do well by taking
the BPA throughout the remainder of the draft. |
52 |
Joseph Addai |
RB |
Corey Dillon is still quite good, but who’s behind him? |
53 |
Kelly Jennings
CB |
Jennings could push for a starting position immediately. |
54 |
Demetrius Williams |
WR |
Somewhere they need to pick up another receiver, so why
not now? |
55 |
Joe Klopfenstein |
TE |
This kid is a steal here. The Bengals get a solid pass
receiver that can also block. Imagine that, a TE that can do what he’s
supposed to do. |
56 |
Alan
Zemaitis
(4) |
CB |
Trade
with Giants.
Not bad,
they trade down and still manage to fill a need in the defensive
secondary. |
57 |
Daniel Bullocks |
S |
Having a real nose for the ball, Bullocks seems to always
be in the middle of things. |
58 |
Darryl Tapp |
DE |
I really like this guy’s inside move. |
59 |
Ryan O’Callaghan |
OT |
This is probably a bit of a reach, but they really need
to address their O-line. |
60 |
Maurice Drew |
RB |
Compact and with a low center of gravity, Drew is a good
value pick here. |
61 |
Pat Watkins
S |
Very solid selection – John Lynch is getting up in years,
so it’s a good idea to train his eventual replacement. |
62 |
Rodrique Wright
DT |
Somehow Tony Dungy needs to reach this kid for this pick
to work out for the Colts. Often called an underachiever, Wright has a
lot of ability. |
63 |
Maurice Stovall |
WR |
Golden Domers across the nation are cheering because one
of their own finally got taken off the board. This is another good pick
that fills a hole. |
64 |
Taitsui Lutui
OG |
They haven’t taken a WR as of yet, but they will
eventually. |
Round Three

Comments
65 |
Dee Webb |
CB |
A solid, albeit unspectacular pick. |
66 |
DeMario Minter |
CB |
Why not double up on the position? |
67 |
Charles
Spencer
G |
This kid is about as hard-nosed as they come.
68 |
Cedric
Griffin
(2) |
CB |
Trade
with Niners.
This kid makes a nice bookend to go with Adam Jones. |
69 |
Mark Anderson
DE |
He’ll tear it up as a 3-4 OLB for Raider Nation. |
70 |
Babatunde Oshinowo |
DT |
An outstanding selection. The Bills need a two-gap DT and
Oshinowo fills the bill. |
71
Jerious Norwood |
RB |
I really like this kid. He has a good burst and good
vision. |
72 |
Anthony Fasano |
TE |
This fills a big need for the Cards, but they still need
at least one OT. |
73 |
Jesse Mahelona |
DT |
Speaking of doubling up, the Bills get a pair for the
inside of the front four. |
74 |
Gerris Wilkinson
LB |
The Lions manage to fill another need. |
75 |
Ray Edwards |
DE |
They’ll find a place for him along the front seven. |
76 |
Jason Avant |
WR |
While not a burner, Avant manages to catch anything
thrown in his direction. |
77 |
Parys Haralson |
DE |
The Rams need a pass rusher for their front four. |
78 |
John McCargo |
DT |
McCargo got overlooked somewhat because of Mario Williams
and Manny Lawson, but he can play too. He’ll fit nicely into their
D-line rotation. |
79 |
Jeremy Trueblood |
OT |
Sooner or later they had to address the loss of Kevin
Schaffer to Cleveland. |
80 |
Todd Watkins |
WR |
BPA that doesn’t play RB or QB. |
81 |
Dusty Dvoracek
DT |
They need someone to help stop the run, and this kid has
a nasty streak. He may be better suited as a 3-4 DE. |
82 |
Jonathan Orr |
WR |
Orr could be described as a poor man’s Braylon Edwards. |
83 |
Charlie Whitehurst |
QB |
Whitehurst is the best of what’s left at QB. They need
someone young to groom for the future behind Brad Johnson. |
84 |
Greg Blue |
S |
Just keep filling holes when you get to this point. |
85 |
Derrick Martin |
CB |
Same here. |
86 |
Derek Hagen |
WR |
Somebody eventually has to take him off the board.
Hopefully Coach Bill can make something of him. |
87 |
Orien Harris |
DT |
Trade
with Giants.
Might as well give them another piece for the front four. |
88 |
Kyle Williams
DT |
I know, it’s not a need pick. At least it’s not a reach. |
89 |
Stanley McClover |
DE |
Another pick for depth. |
90 |
Tim Jennings |
CB |
Just keep plugging holes where you can. |
91 |
Jonathan Lewis |
DT |
Although they recently signed Sam Adams, they still need
help for the D-line rotation. |
92 |
Roger McIntosh
LB |
I have one word for you - reach. |
93 |
Andrew Whitworth |
OT |
There’s no disgrace in doubling up in an area of need. |
94 |
Greg Eslinger
C |
Jeff Saturday can’t play forever. Besides, it’s never a
bad thing to have depth along the O-line. |
95 |
Fred Matua
OG |
Like I said, it’s never a bad thing to have depth along
the O-line. |
96 |
Brandon Williams
WR |
They’ve lost Plaxico and Randle El in consecutive years.
I think it might be time to add one. |
97 |
Victor Adeyanju
DE |
Compensatory pick.
With John Abraham now in Atlanta, the Jets need a pass rusher. |
Trades:
1 –
The Saints send the 2nd overall pick to the Jets in exchange for
picks 4 and 29 in 2006 plus a 2nd round pick in 2007.
2 –
The Titans send the 3rd overall pick to the 49ers for picks 6 and 68 in 2006
plus a 2nd and 4th round pick in 2007.
3 –
The Giants send the 25th overall pick to the Browns in exchange for
pick 43 in 2006 and a 1st round pick in 2007.
4 –
The Saints send the 34th overall pick to the Giants in exchange for
picks 56 and 87 in 2006 and a 4th round pick in 2007.
