DATELINE
BEREA:
The 2006 season is officially past the half-way mark, and - even though it's
Pittsburgh week - somefans are already trying to take a little sneak peek at
what moves the Browns could make before the start of the 2007 season.
Personally, I
live for the NFL DRAFT; so looking ahead to my
favorite day of the entire football season with great anticipation is an
easy thing for me to do. However, I would like to point out a few personnel
moves that could be made before the draft . . .
TEAM NEED: OFFENSIVE LINE
- Joe Andruzzi
and Cosey Coleman are not the answer at the guard positions. Although the
play of the O-line has improved since the promotion of Jeff Davidson to
Offensive Coordinator, this team needs linemen who can dominate at the point
of attack.
PROPOSED SOLUTION:
Cincinnati's
Eric Steinbach and Jacksonville's Vince Manuwai are
scheduled to become unrestricted free agents at the conclusion of the 2006
season. Steinbach deserves to be in the Pro Bowl and Manuwai is on the rise
as well. They're both young and they'll only get better with time.
TEAM NEED: CORNERBACK
- While Todd
Grantham and the entire defensive coaching staff are to be commended on the
job they've done this year - and particularly against Atlanta - for getting
the few healthy players in the secondary to play above and beyond reasonable
expectations, there's still no substitute for talent. Gary Baxter tore the
patellar tendon in both of his knees, and Daylon McCutcheon spent the entire
2006 season in injured reserve - and he's not getting any younger.
Personally, it would not surprise me if the Browns were to reach an injury
settlement agreement with Baxter and wish him well in his future endeavors.
On the bright side, a healthy Leigh Bodden anchoring one corner leaves only
one corner spot up for grabs. Brodney Pool has done an admirable job making
the transition from safety, but I'd rather see him as the third corner for
now.
POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
Former Ohio
State Buckeye and current Buffalo Bill Nate Clements will be an unrestricted
free agent at the end of the 2006 season, and would look very good donning
the Brown and Orange in 2007.
And as far as the 2007 NFL draft goes . . .

1 |
Joe
Thomas |
OT |
The
Cards have offensive skill position players out the wa-zoo, but are in
serious need of grunts in the trenches. Thomas will start immediately at
LT. |
2 |
Calvin Johnson*
WR |
As
long as Matt Millen is the GM, the Lions are going to suck canal water.
Millen also has a reputation of taking a WR early in the draft.
3 |
Brady Quinn
QB |
Neither Andrew Walter nor Aaron Brooks is the answer in Raider Nation.
Unfortunately, this QB position isn’t the only issue in Oakland. |
4 |
Gaines Adams |
DE |
The
Tampa 2 defense gets a pass rusher early. They’ll be hoping that there’s
an OT or WR on the board that’s worth taking in round two.
5 |
Leon Hall |
CB |
I
said it before the 2005 draft, and I’ll say it again. Adam Jones is not
worth a top ten pick. Hall may not be worth a top five pick, but he is
worth a first rounder. |
6 |
Adrian Peterson*
RB |
The
Texans had the opportunity to draft Reggie Bush last draft, but NOOOOOO.
They’re lucky that Peterson is still on the board. |
7 |
Brian Brohm*
QB |
Daunte Culpepper is a bust and Joey Harrington isn’t quite the answer
either. An off-season effort to bolster the O-line will also help. |
8 |
Levi Brown |
OT |
Ryan Tucker may be getting a little long in the tooth, and QB Charlie
Frye needs better blocking in front of him. This is a move that’s been a
long time coming. |
9 |
Quentin Moses
DE |
Moses may have to convert to OLB if he has any aspirations of leading
his team to the land that’s flowing with milk and honey. |
10 |
Ted Ginn Jr.*
WR |
From Washington to complete 2006 draft day trade. Can you imagine the
party that Jay Cutler is going to throw when he hears this selection?
Life is very good. |
11 |
Marcus McCauley |
CB |
Nate Clements is a UFA after the 2006 season and is likely gone (to
Cleveland?). They’ll try to trade up to get Levi Brown, but will most
likely fail. |
12 |
Paul Posluszny
LB |
Sometimes you just take the best player available regardless of
position. Posluszny can play any of the three LB positions and do it
well. |
13 |
Quinn Pitcock |
DT |
Help in the trenches is just what the doctor ordered in St. Louis. This
kid just keeps getting better and better. |
14 |
Kenny Irons
RB |
The
Youth movement continues in green Bay. The heir apparent to Brett Favre
will likely see a lot of playing time with his new backfield companion. |
15 |
LaRon Landry |
S |
The
secondary just got better in San Francisco, or wherever they’re moving
to. |
16 |
Justin Blalock |
OT |
Although he played offensive tackle in college, he’d get playing time
sooner as a guard. They have plenty of wide receivers, and a D-lineman
here is a reach. |
17 |
Sam Baker*
OT |
O-line is a primary need in Atlanta. Baker may have the most upside
potential of any O-lineman in this coming draft. |
18 |
Patrick Willis
LB |
LB
is a major need here, so why not take the best player available? |
19 |
Dwayne Jerrett*
WR |
The
Cowboys take the best player available – end of story. |
20 |
Brandon Meriweather |
S |
With 4.4 speed in the 40, he may even be able to play some at the
corner. |
21 |
Jeff Samardzija |
WR |
This kid catches everything thrown his way. Need I say anything more? |
22 |
LaMarr Woodley
DE |
Of
their three primary needs, this pick makes the most sense. |
23 |
Jake Long*
OT |
Another case where you take the best player available. You cannot
overemphasize the need for quality linemen on either side of the ball. |
24 |
Michael Griffin
S |
From Seattle for Deion Branch. The secondary needs serious help in terms
of a combination of size and speed. Griffin fills both needs and does it
well. |
25 |
Daymeion Hughes |
CB |
Depending on which underclassmen come out, this might be a bit of a
reach, but at least it fills a primary need. |
26 |
Darrelle Revis |
CB |
Even more help for the defensive backfield is on the way. |
27 |
Frank Okam*
DT |
DT
has been an issue in the Meadowlands for a few years now. William Joseph
may or may not be the long-term solution. |
28 |
Michael Bush |
RB |
J-Lewis gets some stiff competition at RB. |
29 |
Alan Branch*
DT |
Another big body to help plug up the middle of the opponent’s offensive
line is all wrapped up and ready to go. |
30 |
Troy Smith |
QB |
The
Redskin brass will decide that, after seven games, Jason Campbell is not
the answer – and then spend yet another high draft selection on a QB. |
31 |
Zach Miller*
TE |
Why
not add a solid pass receiving TE to this offense? |
32 |
Glenn Dorsey |
DT |
I
think that, should Dorsey decide to come out early, he’ll be a late
first round selection. Why not let him go to a team that needs a run
stuffer? |
