So many times, we tend to pass judgment too harshly and too quickly. Each week, after we have had a chance to digest the game, here at DawgBones.com we will break down the Cleveland Browns game from the week before. Let us look at the top 5 good things, the top 5 bad things and the top 5 things that failed to impress us in this week’s game. The segment is called 20/20 Browns Hindsight and we hope you enjoy it.
Top 5 Good Things: Jets Game
1. What an effort by the defense! The Jets brought the 7th ranked scoring offense into last Sunday's game and the Browns defense held them to 6 points. Jets QB Chad Pennington completed only 11 of 28 pass attempts for 108 yards, 2 interceptions and QB rating of 21.1.
2. Starting safety Sean Jones continues his impressive season. On Sunday Jones intercepted 2 balls, made 5 tackles and 3 pass defenses. Jones' effort did not go un-noticed and he was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week. It was the first time since 1994 that a Browns safety won the honor.
3. Run Reuben, run! that was the mantra on Sunday as Reuben Droughns ran for a season high 125 yards on 33 carries and a touchdown. It was the first success the team and Droughns had shown in 2006 running the ball. Ironically it happened in the week that Droughns had domestic abuse charges dropped against him in Denver.
4. New offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson was not intimidated by calling plays for the 1st time in his coaching career. In fact his play calling led the team to season highs in rushing attempts and yards. The Browns also showed improvement converting 3rd downs offensively. After a 1-11 performance against the Broncos, the Browns converted 7-17(41%) of their 3rd downs against the Jets. A very solid performance for Davidson in his inaugural game as offensive play caller.
5. TE Kellen Winslow II is talking the talk and is walking the walk. Winslow leads all NFL TE's in receptions, is 2nd in the league in receiving yards for TE's and 6th in the league in touchdowns for TE's. Sunday he tallied 7 receptions for 76 yards and a 30 yard TD. Winslow continues to be the Browns best offensive player, week in and week out.
Top 5 Bad Things: Jets Game
1. After weeks of great play returning kickoffs, Joshua Cribbs has been poor returning punts in the absence of PR Dennis Northcutt. Not only did Cribbs almost botch a punt return by trying to catch it awkwardly, he struggled returning kickoffs as well. Cribbs average fell by nearly 8 yards per return against the Jets Sunday. Perhaps it's time to take a little off Mr. Cribbs' plate now Romeo?
2. The coverage units on special teams have been excellent this year, that was until Sunday. After a Phil Dawson field goal to go up 20-3 seemingly put the game in hand for the Browns, they yielded a 99 yard kick return for a TD on the ensuing kickoff. It was huge momentum swinger and almost ended up costing the Browns a victory.
3. Kicker Phil Dawson continues to disappoint. When is the last time this guy made a clutch kick anyway? Dawson, somehow, missed a chip shot 26-yarder right before the half that would have given the Browns a 10 point lead. Dawson is having his worst year since his rookie season kicking.
4. QB Charlie Frye had the game taken out of his hands in the 2nd half. After the Jets closed the score to 20-10 the Browns decided to try and throw the ball. Three straight times Frye dropped back, twice he was sacked. From that point on Frye attempted just 3 more passes, being sacked on 1 of them and converted only 1 more 3rd down into a 1st down. This all started with 3:35 left to play in the 3rd quarter! that is quite a drought offensively.
5. Rookie ILB D'Qwell Jackson basically disappeared Sunday against the Jets. Jackson recorded only 1 tackle and assisted on 2 others. It appears that the rookie may be hitting a wall as the season reaches it's midway point. He has yet to make an impact play in 2006.
Top 5 things that failed to impress: Jets Game
1. Knowing that Jackson is not doing much, why won't the coaches make the switch to Chaun Thompson? Thompson, in limited duty Sunday, recorded a special teams tackle, the teams only QB sack and added another QB hurry. Thompson gets little time on the field, but when he does all he does is make plays.
2. The Jets came in to the game 4-3 and were the underdog's earlier in the week, now we know why. Their wins have come against bad football teams. Their defense, especially against the run is atrocious. They have overachieved all season, but Sunday they truly were unimpressive.
3. The lack of blitzing by the Browns defense continues to boggle the mind. Not until the game is on the line late do they decide to bring heat and then it seems like it is every down. Perhaps it's because the Browns have not played with many leads this season. Whatever it is, it doesn't make much sense.
4. Was there a crowd at the game? The Jets must have felt like the home team for most of the 1st half. On their initial drive of the game they drove for over 8 minutes and kicked a field goal, the crowd didn't say boo! It's still a home game and the fans should treat it that way. No wonder teams like the Steelers come into Cleveland Browns Stadium and have so much success.
5. The middle of the field at Cleveland Browns Stadium, you know where the 60 year logo is, looks like crap! I guess the team doesn't feel it should dress the logo up each week? If that's the case then why even put the damn thing there? It's time for the high school and college games to stop at CBS or we may be talking about field turf soon.
