The hits just keep on coming for the Cleveland Browns. Monday the club announced that their best defensive linemen, Orpheus Roye would end his season on injured reserve. Roye has been fighting an MCL injury and won't need surgery, but will have to have proper rest in order to heal.
“It is injured a little more than severely than it was last. Last year, I was able to play through it, but this year it’s a little more injured.”, Roye said when asked about his knee injury this year as opposed to his injury last year.
When head coach Romeo Crennel was asked about Roye's future with the team he said he thought it was very important to get Rote back healthy for the last 2 years of his contract. Roye has been one of the most consistent players on the defensive line since Crennel implemented the 3-4 scheme.
Veteran safety Brian Russell, who missed the Steelers game this past Thursday, has been ruled out for this weeks game against Baltimore. Russell has been dealing with some new swelling in his elbow, the same elbow he had contacted staph infection in earlier this season. Russell is scheduled to be an un-restricted free agent after the season and Crennel said he wouldn't comment on his contract, but did say he liked Russell.
Of course the coach was also asked about his QB situation and as always he was as vague as ever. He is intrigued with Derek Anderson and some of the big play ability he brings to the passing game. He is also enjoying Anderson's ability to avoid the pass rush and get the ball out on time. Anderson has only been sacked 1 time in just over 6 quarters. Crennel would not commit to who his starter for the Ravens game this Sunday would be.
QB Charlie Frye was asked if he would be bale to play against the Ravens, “I don’t know. I haven’t taken my wrist out of the brace. I hope it feels better, but I probably won’t know until Wednesday.”
The question of dropped balls was brought up as well. How can the team get their receivers to focus more? How can they get them to catch the ball with more consistency? Crennel said they have been spending extra time with the Jugs machine, but out side that there wasn't too much they could do.
When veteran WR Joe Jurevicius was asked about playing the remaining games he said, “I think it boils down to pride. All of us wear a name on the back of our jerseys and if you don’t have pride in that, we have issues. I have pride in my last name and I’m being paid a lot of money to play the game I love. It’s the least I can do.”
Browns fans hope that more guys in the Browns locker room fell that way, but sadly there are probably more that don't. That's why this team is 4-9.
