2006 NFL Power Rankings

Rank(last week)

Movement Notes

1.Indianapolis Colts(8-0)

1 What a difference safety Bob Sanders makes for that defense! Sanders recorded 11 tackles and an interception in the Colts win over the Patriots. Perhaps with Sanders back the run defense will improve, that could be big trouble for the rest of the AFC.
2. Chicago Bears(7-1) 1 They weren't going undefeated anyway so better to get their stinker out of the way and not do it against the Giants. The loss of WR Bernard Berrian is big for this team and really will hampers the offense. Good think Berrian wasn't lost for the season.
3. San Diego Chargers(6-2) 1 Not a very impressive win against the Browns Sunday. The Browns anemic offense hung 25 points on the vaunted Chargers defense. Carson Palmer and the Bengals should be licking their chops. Thank GOD for LT, without him the chargers are an average team.
4. Denver Broncos(6-2) 3 The Broncos bounced back in a big way beating the Steelers in Pittsburgh. So much for the Steelers having their number. QB Jake Plummer has played great in his last 2 starts and the Broncos offense is humming along because of it.
5. New York Giants(6-2) - Another contender that was pushed to the brink of defeat by an inferior team. The Giants lost DE Michael Strahan to injury for the next 2-8 weeks. A huge blow for a team and defense that was beginning to hit it's stride.
6.New England Patriots(6-2) 3 It just goes to show that even good teams can't over come turnovers. 5 times the Patriots did that against the Colts and the Colts made them pay for it. The Jets are next and they will be ready coming off their bye week.
7. New Orleans Saints(6-2) 2 QB Drew Brees is not only the Comeback Player of the Year, he might just be the league MVP! The Saints defense is playing very well and that gives this team great balance. The Steelers are next and win number 7 should be as well.
8.Baltimore Ravens(6-2) - So much credit is being given to Brian Billick for calling the offensive play now. Well he can thank hi defense for 14 quick points on Sunday against the Bengals. If not for them Billick would have helped his team tally 12 points on offense. What a mastermind he is.
9. Jacksonville Jaguars(5-3) 1 We thought QB David Gerrard should have started from the beginning of the season. He gives the Jaguars the best chance to win each week.
10.Kansas City Chiefs(5-3) 3 We were wrong! That's right Herman Edwards has this team playing good football right now with a backup QB. They will be tested in Miami this week, but should be 6-3 when the day is done.
11.Atlanta Falcons(5-3) 5 What a terrible loss after 2 solid wins. The Lions did have 2 weeks to prepare and the Tampa Cover 2 has always given Michael Vick fits. They will need to show better focus this week at home or risk losing again to another inferior team.
12. Seattle Seahawks(5-3) 7 The defense has decided to start playing finally. Albeit they shutout a poor Oakland Raiders team. QB Seneca Wallace has done a good job in relief and has not hurt the team with his play.
13.Dallas Cowboys(4-4) 2 One of the weirdest endings to a game ever! They should be 5-3, but the games are 60 minutes and then some in the NFL. They are still very much in the mix in the NFC East and should bounce back in a big way against the woeful Cardinals.
14. Carolina Panthers(4-4) 2 A week off and the Bucs next on your schedule mean win number 5 for the Panthers. They will look to wash the bad taste out of their mouth from their last nationally televised game in a big way.
15. Cincinnati Bengals(4-4) 1 Would of, should of, could of. The Bengals played well after gifting the Ravens an early 14 points, but it was not enough. They go back home to play a very good Chargers team. This is the week the Bengals need to win or the playoffs could be just a dream.
16.St. Louis Rams(4-4) 4 The Battle of Missouri was an embarrassment for the Rams and their fans. The recipe is simple, take WR Tory Holt out of the game and your odds of winning increase greatly. They now must travel to Seattle to play a Seahawks team that already beat them this year. Like the Bengals, it's now or never for the Rams.
17.Philadelphia Eagles(4-4) - The Skins are riding an emotional high, but the Eagles have had 2 weeks to prepare for them. They are still very much alive in the NFC East as well and should bounce back with a home win this Sunday.
18.New York Jets(4-4) - They were probably hoping the Patriots would beat the Colts. Now they have to play a Patriots team that rarely has 2 bad games in a row. They have had 2 weeks to prepare for them and catch the Pats on a short week. stranger things have happened.
19.Minnesota Vikings(4-4) 4 10 points in 2 weeks for a team that has an offensive minded coach. Not good. How long will it be before QB Brad Johnson gets the hook? It could be as early as next week if this team lays another egg this week.
20.Washington Redskins(3-5) 3 Sometimes it's better to be lucky then good, right Skins?! They will need even more from their defense if they hope to get back to the playoffs in 2006. The Eagles are waiting with 2 weeks to prepare. It doesn't look good for them.
21. Buffalo Bills(3-5) 4 The defense bailed them out and so did Brett Favre. If not for a goal-line INT the Bills could have easily lost the game this past Sunday. RB Willis McGahee has a broken rib, but backup Anthony Thomas filled in well. The Colts will show no mercy to them Sunday.
22.Miami Dolphins(2-6) 9 Their defense is still one of the best in football and they showed the world that this past Sunday. Pride does strange things, it led the Dolphins to a win over the Bears this past Sunday. They have not quit on coach Nick Saban and are poised to make a run. They get the Chiefs at home and could be 3-6 by the end of the day Sunday.
23. Green Bay Packers(3-5) 3 They played well defensively, but once again QB Brett Favre put them behind the 8-ball. One INT was returned for a TD and another prevented a Packers TD. The Vikings are reeling, but we don't expect the Packers to beat them.
24. San Francisco 49ers(3-5) 5 After getting their teeth kicked in the week before the Niners defense allowed a mere 3 points to the Vikings. They are now 1 win away from matching their total from 2005. They are not a good road team and will go up against a Lions team that just beat the Falcons. This should be a very good game.
25.  Cleveland Browns(2-6) 3 A game that all the breaks went their way, but 6 field-goals doomed their chances for victory. They traveled into the red-zone 6 times and came away with 1 TD. They are struggling stopping the run and the Falcons have the leagues best running game. Uh, oh.
26. Tennessee Titans(2-6) 5 So much for them being on a roll. The Jaguars laid a 1st class ass whipping on them. Now they have the Ravens coming in and QB Vince Young is going to get quite an education.
27. Pittsburgh Steelers(2-6) 1 Nope they aren't going to the Super Bowl this year, not even the playoffs. Did we all dream that they won the Super Bowl in 2005? The Saints are coming to town and they will be marching.
28. Detroit Lions(2-6) 2 A great win over the Falcons this past Sunday. Granted they had 2 weeks to prepare, but a win is a win. RB Kevin Jones is growing into quite a weapon for offensive coordinator Mike Martz. The Niners are coming to town and back-to-back wins could be as well.
29.Houston Texans(2-6) 1 They were very game against a Giants team that more then likely was over looking them. They now go to Jacksonville to play a Jaguars team aching for revenge. This has all the ingredients for a blowout.
30.  Oakland Raiders(2-6) 3 The defense is playing very well, but the offense is non-existent. The offensive line is horrible and until it gets better the Raiders won't get better.
31.Tampa Bay Buccaneers(2-6) 7 This team is 2 plays from being 0-8. They were abysmal at home against the Saints Sunday. Now they get to go on the road and play a Panthers team that had 2 weeks to prepare for them. Can you say blowout?
32. Arizona Cardinals(1-7) - Did anyone else notice they did not play this past Sunday? just checking.
